Connect Every Range

MMA Training in Cortlandt Manor, NY

Develop striking, wrestling, grappling, and the transitions that turn separate skills into complete martial arts training.

Mixed Martial Arts at Whetstone

Learn to Connect the Ranges

Whetstone’s MMA program in Cortlandt Manor connects skills from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, boxing, and Muay Thai. MMA is more than practicing those disciplines separately. Students learn how decisions, posture, distance, and position change as an exchange moves between striking, takedowns, wrestling, ground control, and grappling.

A striking exchange can create an opportunity for a takedown. A takedown attempt can lead to a scramble. A scramble can settle into top or bottom position, where grappling control and escapes matter. Training the transitions helps students understand how individual skills fit into a more complete martial-arts game.

Whetstone is located at 2305 Crompond Road in Cortlandt Manor and serves Northern Westchester and nearby Lower Putnam communities.

Integrated Practice

Striking, Wrestling, and Grappling

Striking develops offense, defense, timing, and the ability to manage distance while standing. Wrestling develops entries, takedown offense and defense, scrambles, and control through the transition to the mat. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu develops positional control, escapes, and submissions on the ground.

MMA changes how those skills interact. Students practice connecting ranges rather than assuming an exchange will remain in one discipline. Work may include moving from striking range to a takedown, maintaining position after the takedown, responding to a scramble, or using grappling to control and return to a better position.

Students can also develop individual areas through Whetstone’s BJJ, Wrestling, and Muay Thai programs.

What Students Develop

  • Striking fundamentals, combinations, and defense
  • Wrestling entries and takedown awareness
  • Ground control, escapes, and grappling decisions
  • Transitions between standing and ground ranges
  • Composure and decision-making against resistance

A class may focus on selected areas rather than every skill at once. Continued training develops the ability to connect them.

Who MMA Is For

MMA can serve people specifically interested in mixed martial arts, students who want broader combat skills, grapplers improving their striking, strikers improving their grappling, and hobbyists who value integrated training.

Students interested in eventual competition can work toward that goal, but competition is not required. Prospective students without previous martial-arts experience should contact Whetstone for help choosing an appropriate first class. Information about academy culture and membership is available on the main FAQ.
