Age-Structured Youth Training

Kids Jiu Jitsu at Whetstone

Whetstone Jiu Jitsu offers age-structured Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes in Cortlandt Manor, New York. The three groups—ages 4–6, 6–10, and 10–15—give students instruction appropriate to their stage of development rather than placing every child into one combined program.

Younger students build familiarity with class structure, movement, following directions, and working with teammates. Older groups develop a progressively deeper understanding of Jiu Jitsu positions, takedowns, control, escapes, and age-appropriate technical work.

Families from Northern Westchester and nearby Lower Putnam County can review exact class times on the Schedule page or contact Whetstone for help identifying the appropriate age group.

Ages 4–6

Jiu Jitsu Ages 4–6

This class prepares kids to participate in Whetstone’s older Jiu Jitsu classes. The emphasis is on following instructions, working as part of a team, and developing physical skills such as balance, coordination, and athleticism.

Students become familiar with how a class is organized, how to move in the training space, and how to work safely with partners. Those habits create a foundation for continued learning without expecting young children to perform the more advanced technical work taught to older groups.

The goal is to make foundational movement and class participation understandable for this age group while helping each child become more comfortable with the routines of martial arts training.

Ages 6–10

Jiu Jitsu Ages 6–10

This group builds a foundation in the primary Jiu Jitsu positions. Students practice takedowns, positional control, and escapes while learning how the major parts of a grappling exchange fit together.

The established class structure includes a warmup, positional drill, technique instruction, and live training based on the focus of the day. Positional drilling gives students a defined situation to practice, while technique instruction explains the movement and objectives. Live training lets students work with resistance within the class focus.

This age group develops technical familiarity without being merged into the older 10–15 program. Instruction remains organized around the needs of children ages 6–10.

Ages 10–15

Jiu Jitsu Ages 10–15

This group continues to develop the primary Jiu Jitsu positions and introduces more advanced techniques appropriate for teens and bigger kids. Students refine takedowns, positional control, escapes, and submissions while building on the grappling foundation developed in younger training.

As students become ready for additional detail, they can work on recognizing more options within a position and making better decisions during partner practice. The program develops beyond the younger curriculum without relying on an invented belt, testing, or promotion system.

Ages 10–15 remains a distinct program group with its own instructional needs, technical expectations, and image section.
