Wrestling at Whetstone

Youth Wrestling at Whetstone

Whetstone Jiu Jitsu offers wrestling training in Cortlandt Manor with a strong focus on helping kids and young athletes develop fundamental wrestling skills. Teens and adults are also welcome to train.

Youth students can develop stance, movement, hand fighting, entries, takedowns, takedown finishes, positional control, and scrambles. Training also gives children a place to improve coordination, learn to work with training partners, and build confidence through the progressive development of practical skills.

These areas work together to create a grappling foundation. A stable stance supports movement; hand fighting helps establish position; a takedown connects an entry to a controlled finish; and scrambles require continued positional decisions before either training partner has settled the exchange.

Beginner-Friendly Wrestling

No Previous Wrestling Experience Required

Children do not need previous wrestling experience to benefit from training. Beginners can learn the underlying pieces progressively, including how stance affects balance, how to move without losing position, how hand fighting creates openings, and how basic takedown mechanics connect an entry to a controlled finish.

Older beginners may participate as well. Teens, adults, and martial artists who did not wrestle scholastically can use the same progressive approach to make wrestling more understandable without trying to learn every situation at once.

No separate beginner class or fixed curriculum is implied. Students should contact Whetstone if they want help choosing an appropriate first session.

Core Areas of Wrestling Practice

  • Stance, movement, balance, and level changes
  • Hand fighting and establishing position
  • Entries into takedown attempts
  • Takedown mechanics and controlled finishes
  • Positional wrestling and mat control
  • Scrambles and continued positional decision-making

A given session may focus on selected areas rather than covering every item at once. Students develop the connections through continued practice.

All Ages Are Welcome

Although youth wrestling is a major focus of the program, wrestling training at Whetstone is not limited to children. Teens and adults looking to improve takedowns, scrambling, positional control, BJJ, or MMA grappling are also welcome.

Whetstone is located at 2305 Crompond Road in Cortlandt Manor and serves families and students from Peekskill, Yorktown Heights, Mohegan Lake, and nearby Northern Westchester and Lower Putnam communities. Meet the instructors on the Coaches page.

Cross-Training

Wrestling for BJJ

For Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling can improve takedowns, top control, scrambles, and positional transitions. It helps students connect standing exchanges to the ground and continue working before a position is fully established.

Youth and adult students interested in that connection can also explore Whetstone’s Gi and No-Gi BJJ program.

Wrestling for MMA

In MMA, wrestling develops takedown offense and defense, helps students control where an exchange takes place, and supports transitions from standing into grappling.

Wrestling is one part of Whetstone’s broader MMA training, alongside striking and grappling.
