Beginner-Focused and All-Levels Training

Whetstone Jiu Jitsu offers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes in Cortlandt Manor, New York, serving Northern and Upper Westchester and nearby Lower Putnam communities. Training includes beginner-focused instruction and all-levels classes, giving new students a clear place to begin while allowing experienced grapplers to continue developing.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling art built around position, control, escapes, takedown awareness, and submissions. Students learn technique through instruction and partner practice, then develop the ability to apply it against resistance. Previous martial-arts experience is not required.

Starting BJJ

Beginner Training, One Position at a Time

The beginner class focuses on a specific position and teaches the goals and strategy of each training partner within that position. Understanding both sides matters: students learn what one person is trying to accomplish, what the other person needs to prevent, and how those objectives shape useful decisions.

This approach develops familiarity with common grappling positions without assuming prior knowledge. Students can focus on foundational movement, posture, control, and decision-making in a manageable context. Over time, repeated exposure helps positions feel less unfamiliar and gives students a clearer way to recognize what is happening during partner practice.

Progress is built step by step. A beginner does not need to arrive knowing terminology, techniques, or how to move like an experienced grappler.

Continuing Development

All-Levels BJJ

All-Levels classes are suitable for beginners and advanced practitioners. The instructional portion may use a connected series of techniques or a group of separate techniques that follow a common theme. That structure helps students see how an initial action can lead to a reaction, adjustment, or next option.

More experienced practitioners can use the material to improve technical chains, positional options, control, escapes, submissions, and live application. Not every class covers every area at once. The lesson’s position or theme provides the focus, while each student works with it at an appropriate level of detail.

All-levels training also gives newer students a chance to practice alongside people with broader experience while continuing to build their own fundamentals.

Two Training Formats

Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu

Gi Jiu Jitsu

Gi training uses the traditional uniform. The jacket and pants create additional grip options that affect control, movement, escapes, and technical choices.

No-Gi Jiu Jitsu

No-Gi training uses athletic attire and different grip systems. It places additional emphasis on body positioning, movement, wrestling influence, and control that does not depend on holding the uniform.

Neither format needs to be treated as superior. Exposure to both helps students build a broader grappling skill set and understand how the same positional ideas can be expressed through different grips and movement choices.

What Students Develop

Training may address different areas depending on the class focus. Across continued practice, students can develop:

  • Positional understanding and decision-making
  • Guard work and passing
  • Escapes and defensive awareness
  • Control from common grappling positions
  • Takedown awareness and standing-to-ground transitions
  • Submission mechanics and defense
  • Live training against resistance

Who BJJ Is For

Complete beginners can start without previous martial-arts experience. Recreational students and hobbyists can train for the challenge of learning a technical skill, physical activity, or an ongoing martial-arts practice. People interested in self-defense can develop positional control, escapes, takedown awareness, and experience working against resistance.

Experienced grapplers can continue refining their game, and competitors can prepare for competition goals with guidance from the coaches. Competition is optional; students do not have to compete to take training seriously or make progress.

BJJ Questions

No. Previous martial-arts or grappling experience is not required. Beginner instruction introduces positions, objectives, movement, and decisions progressively.

Does Whetstone offer Gi and No-Gi BJJ?

Yes. Whetstone offers both Gi and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu training. Check the current schedule for class formats and times.

What is the difference between Beginners and All Levels?

Beginner classes focus on a specific position and explain the goals and strategy of both training partners. All-Levels instruction may connect a series of techniques or explore separate techniques that share a theme.

Do I have to compete?

No. Competition is available for interested students, but many people train recreationally.

What should I wear?

A gi is required for Gi classes. Appropriate athletic attire is used for No-Gi training. The main FAQ page provides additional gear guidance.

How often should a beginner train?

Most beginners make excellent progress training two to three times per week. Consistency is more important than training every day.
